We've adopted at least our share of dogs from shelters and rescues over the years. On more than one occasion, we got our new four-legged member of the family home and watched the energy level rise dramatically. When we asked (afterward, lol), we found out that the animals had been sedated during their time at the shelter. This hadn't been disclosed initially.

It wasn't a big problem for us -- we rolled with it -- but it was a surprise. But we're also relatively young and very experienced with dogs, so dealing with a furry typhoon blowing through the house (and dealing with it constructively) is within our skill set. It might not be for everyone.
