I've seen occasional references in the Chicago Transit Forum and in other places that the 6 actually used to be the main route between the South Shore and Downtown and the J14 was considered supplementary. But looking at today, now their roles are reversed. The J14 is in the Frequent Network and 6 is slightly less frequent than it. The thing is, the J14 is busier than the 6, but not by a large margin, but there is an interesting I saw in the ridership reports.

Take the February 2026 ridership report for example. The 6 does have noticeably less ridership than the J14, but this is only on weekdays. On weekends, the J14 has noticeably less ridership on weekends, with Sunday ridership being almost around 50% of weekday ridership. However, if you look at the 6, it actually has higher Saturday ridership than on weekdays, and even Sunday ridership is only around 80% of weekday ridership.

So why does the J14 have a much larger difference between weekday and weekend ridership compared to the 6? And what caused the J14 to become the "more important" route for connecting the Loop to the eastern part of the Southside than the 6?
