Why did not God guide Canaanites like he did with Israel?

When in Egypt, Israel lacked God's fellowship and was into idolatry. After rescuing them from bondage, God gave a special revelation, a covenant, and even a law to keep Israel away from idol worship. However, God did not give the same kind of direction, revelation, and commands to the Canaanites, so how could they come to repentance? Why were Canaanites not given equal opportunity like Israel before God ordered their destruction?

I know that the Canaanites had committed worse sins, like child sacrifice to Baal and Molech. Even a person abiding by natural law would know this is sin. However, my question is, Israel too later on committed the same sins and lost the Promised Land. God scattered them from the Land but did not obliterate them. Then, why did God obliterate the Canaanites?

Is God's sovereign choice the only answer? Israel was not obliterated because GOd chose them and made a covenant with their patriarchs. Is that the only justifiable reason?
