This visualization shows the annual number of earthquakes with magnitude ≥5.5 in the Tōhoku region (northeastern Japan) from 2012 to 2025, along with the analyzed area and the location of recent major events.
In 2025, the region recorded the highest number of M≥5.5 earthquakes since the end of the main aftershock phase following the 2011 Tōhoku megathrust earthquake.
Two recent large earthquakes occurred in this region:
• M7.6 on December 8, 2025
• M7.4 on April 20, 2026
The magnitude threshold (M ≥ 5.5) highlights stronger events while reducing the influence of smaller aftershocks.
