Secret clearance renewal stuck for 8 months and marked complex. Any advice?
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my experience and ask for advice from people who have gone through a similar Secret clearance renewal delay.
I applied for my Secret clearance renewal in August 2025. In September 2025, PSPC found a couple of mistakes in my forms and those were corrected. Since then, there has been no real update.
Every time my agency follows up, the response is basically the same:
The case is marked as complex and is still in process.
It has now been around 8 months since I applied for the renewal.
I also applied for Reliability status in early March 2026. That one has also been marked as complex, but it has only been about 2 months so far. The update is always the same for that too:
Marked complex and in process.
The difficult part is that my employer has now told me that I cannot continue working anymore, even from home, until the renewal is completed. So my contract has effectively ended and I cannot restart until my Secret renewal comes through.
I wanted to ask the community:
How long did your Secret clearance renewal take?
Has anyone else had their renewal marked as complex?
Is there anything I can realistically do at this stage besides waiting and asking my agency to follow up?
Any advice or shared experiences would really help. This delay has now started affecting my job and contract, so I am trying to understand what options I may have.
