Sharing my TSA Confirm ID experience.
I am on h1b visa and live in Seattle. WA does not give real id to non citizens. So my passport is my only real id option. I submitted my passport for renewal but had to make a short trip to Cali. So I decided to try the TSA Confirm ID. I paid $ 45 the day before my flight and printed the receipt. (created account in that website, it helps).
At TSA checkpoints, I shared the receipt and my non-real ID drivers license. At both SEA and SFO it was a breeze. They didn't ask any other questions but gave me a leaflet asking me to upgrade to real id (there is nothing I can do!!)
