Maybe I’m off here, but it kind of feels like Moonfin is trying to do a lot at once across different platforms. There’s Android TV / Fire TV, Roku, Smart TVs (webOS/Tizen), mobile, desktop, the server plugin, and now even a new self-hostable web client.
Because of that, each client seems to have its own set of bugs, and overall progress can feel a bit slow or uneven depending on where you’re using it.
Obviously people can build things however they want, and I respect that this is a passion project. I’m just coming at this from the perspective of someone who was really excited about it, especially the Android TV client (the first client), and has become a bit less enthusiastic over time.
For what it’s worth, I’ll continue to support the project and I’ve donated before. That said, the very wide scope makes me a bit less hopeful that we’ll see a truly polished, dominant Android TV client anytime soon.
In comparison, clients like Jellyfin’s official apps or Streamyfin tend to have entire teams focused on a single platform, while Moonfin is tackling several at once.
Right now it feels like polish is inconsistent and features take a while to land. Part of me wonders if focusing on fewer platforms first might lead to a more solid and refined experience, then expanding from there. I know v2.0 of the Android TV client is on the horizon, but with development spread across so many platforms, I find myself a bit less optimistic about how much polish we’ll see.
Curious if others feel the same or if I’m missing some context.
