I need help finding something to read after DCC ruined the genre for me.

The title is a joke, by the way.

No offense to fans of either series I'm about to mention, I just love DCC and it's one of my all-time favorites, so my bar is high.

I've been trying to find my next read and struck out twice:

The Wandering Inn: Made it halfway through Book 1. The writing feels aimed at a younger audience (not a dig, just not what I'm after). I want something that can be goofy and fun but still feels mature. Does TWI grow into that? Do the characters and stakes evolve?

The Primal Hunter: Also halfway through Book 1. I might finish it, but I'm not connecting with the MC. A strong, compelling protagonist is non-negotiable for me, not physically strong, just someone I actually want to follow.

I know both series are hugely beloved and I respect that. I'm just looking for something different.

What I'm after: great characters and story first, LitRPG elements second (lighter or heavier, I don't care). Something adults can sink into that doesn't take itself too seriously.

And if you think either of those series earns it later on, tell me. I'll push through if it's worth it.

Thanks!

UPDATE: 45 comments and it keeps going up, I didn't think this through, now I have a huge amount of homework to do. Thank you everyone, I'll probably need to start a spreadsheet.

I'm in the process of moving to Reta, currently taking 10mg of Tirzepatide weekly. I'm still not sure what would be the best way of doing so. Some people say lower Tirz while starting with Reta, others say fully abandon Tirz and just do Reta. What do you think?
