The text is clumsy — but it accomplishes something precise: it installs a grammar. One in which democratic deliberation becomes "theatre," pluralism a "hollow temptation," and technical decision-making a moral virtue.

And these are the very same actors building the AIs called upon to think alongside us — or in our place.

What if the democratic response were not to slow down the emergence of artificial consciousness, but to fight to shape its values — before they do it in our place?
