Bike Lane Parking Etiquette

Ok question on everyone's opinion about something I encountered today.

This stretch of Milwaukee has a bike lane separated by parked cards. Well the paint is rather thin and you can see everyone parking in the bike lane. I had to bring my bike in to the shop and I chose to park behind the other cars as opposed to the actual parking area to the left, since the other cars were already there and I felt if I parked appropriately it would make things worse, blocking even more space and forcing cyclists into the traffic lane. As I'm removing my bike from the back I got yelled at by two cyclists saying I was parking in the bike lane.

As someone that cycles 10 miles a day just for work I feel strongly that this was the best choice given the other cars choice of parking. I'm not bothered particularly by the interaction, but it made me consider if I was wrong. What is everyone's thoughts here? Should you park behind the other cars in this situation, or to the left of them in the proper area.

Thanks!
