I had a new team member join my team recently who was meeting with our director 1:1 while they were filling in as a temporary "team lead". That temporary status ended in April. The team member is meeting with me and is understandably frustrated about losing the team lead status and the management shuffle. I've worked with the team member on a couple of projects prior to my management promotion and know they are a great and talented individual.

My "typical" check-in formula is to provide space for team members to talk about what they've got going on (personally and professionally), their projects, leadership passdowns (if any), and then end by addressing any support needs. How can I best support this team member when, during our first 1:1, they mostly gave short 1- or 2-word responses?
