I have an ADHD son who is 6 and in 1st grade. He has an IEP. This year has been a struggle, we had a really rough beginning to our year with him being placed with a first year teacher. After advocating and many different accommodations tried, we switched my child’s classroom. It was rough transition for a couple of weeks, but it finally clicked and you would be shocked to know the battles he went through at the beginning of the year. He was thriving! The school staff and teachers have been nothing but great, but recently we have issues again.
My child has been disruptive in class, making loud noises, refusing to do work and doing a lot of attention seeking. In the morning is more of reading, writing, whole group and centers. (Which academically he does well at besides the physical writing part 🥴, but we’re working on it).
He’s been removed from the class numerous times for running around, destroying things, loud disruptive noises etc.
He has a reward system in place and they have breaks scheduled for him or allow him to ask for them whenever needed, but he’s been refusing his breaks. I personally think he is correlating breaks with being in trouble and therefore refusing them.
Come the afternoon, he’s does perfect and does so well because it’s more math, science/social studies based.. which is what he loves.
We have changed his medicine up a dose and I was sure it would be the fix because he had gained quite some weight finally and I thought it was the meds, but today he still had a rough morning.. maybe a SMIDGE better.
Anyways, the teachers and I have come to realize that we think it’s attention seeking. He is offered candy when making noises, he’s offered breaks, walks, sitting wherever he wants, he has a visual schedule, there is an aide in the classroom (she is new and that was a change for him). I’m so good at advocating and working with our team, but running out of ideas to even try.
It’s end of the year and I think we’re alllll over it, but I have to get this figured out and find something that could work.
Any fresh new ideas, input, suggestions?
