Years ago I fell in love with fliptop spiral bound but the 3x5 was too small, and the 4×8 was close to perfect but not if you ever wanted a case, pen holder.. anything beyond book.

So I pulled the trigger on custom books, they're 3.5x6 and are just big enough for comprehensive note taking. The advantage of a system like this is that now I can ship these to Etsy leatherworkers, and I can have what they design for standard sizes, fabricated for my custom ones. I'm just breaking it in now.
