(The beginning part is formatted weird as it is directly pasted from two comments I left on the original video of How To Ruin Your Broadway Career)
Some things i noticed- when she dies, she’s back to how she was before. Not malnourished, and no head wound. Also the husband has sharp teeth where canine teeth are, where Elizabeth doesn’t (that’s her name on the contract) also, when she bites her finger, it draws blood. Her hair also looks more brittle at “ate as big a plate as her” and on. That’s also when the switch from her normal self to looking malnourished happens, blink and you’ll miss it. Though the frame before, she looks slightly thinner. Also, Elizabeth has the sharper teeth and red eyes at the end, like the husband, which… I have a feeling that maybe the husband also works for death? Also, the shadow mannequins, they get more and more unrealistic from left to right. And right beforehand, the plate thing reminds me of bitter choco decoration
Also her potentially being a vampire because she continues after ending her husband, and the immortalized thing at the beginning I wasn’t aware of but I did notice her eyes are red, some other foreshadowing.
So, the creator has established that this is the prequel to Cannibal Freak, implying Elizabeth and Mosaic are the same person. I wonder if her “guy” hair belonged to the husband. And her resentment towards immortality leads me to theorize that death has ulterior motives. Working off my idea that the husband was working for death, I wonder if Death was trying to collect souls by making a deal with one person who died to bring souls to them, possibly even slightly corrupting their mind to push them to kill. With that, I think that it’s possible that Death saw the husband kill Elizabeth, but then realized Elizabeth made a far better “avatar.”
Also, the pool of blood is very interesting, could that be the blood of the other souls Death has taken through avatars?
Very ironic that the “she’d do anything” line comes true. She becomes a clown, and there’s many other cruel twists of fate. She mutilates her teeth… whereas previously eating was a big theme of her song.
Also, she refers to herself as a man in this song, but the creator refers to her as she and they. I truly wonder if death is possessing her, especially as her language mirrors the husband slightly, with the swearing. Additionally, when they refer to themselves as a man, they say they have many faces, and in Ruin Your Broadway Career, Death wears a mask.
Also, having been so obsessed with her appearance due to the pressure and manipulation, the inclusion of a breaking mirror in the pre chorus is sad. This could be an allusion to the breaking mirror trope… where a character is so ugly that by looking in a mirror, they break it. She’s certainly jarring to look at.
There is also a reference to her death, saying she’s “choked to death a thousand times in this stranglehold” like how her husband faked her death, or as I replied to someone’s comment, “staged” it
She seems desperate to eat normal food, which she is angry about. Especially ironic is how she describes how she throws up after trying to drink wine, when wine was a repeating element in Ruin Your Broadway Career
Next is the line “dystopia bleeds in crimson and gold” Both gold/ yellow and red were heavily tied to Elizabeth, her dress being red and the stage, her hair, and her ring being gold. This also reminds me of the color of classic curtains
I also find it disturbing, but quite fascinating that in the flashing visual with “better off avoiding mine” the bloodied stumps of her fingers are shown, implying she ate them off or removed them in some other way. I feel like this is also alluded to when she bites her finger in Ruin Your Broadway Career. The transition here, I will say, is EXCELLENT. And, I thought of “biting the hand that feeds you” which is, what she’s doing!
Cannibal Queen, with the line, reminds me of Candle Queen, but darker. Just something I wanted to note.
Someone noted this, I’ll read the comment
its a bare minimum understanding of the themes of the song but i really like how portrayed her death is by the entertainment industry/her agent
even if accidental, he decides to fake it as her being hung to almost make her death seem even more dramatic
her body being hung behind a window is also interesting as i usually see windows as representative of freedom in a sense, dying and being hung infront of "freedom" as almost a stage she always wanted to be on
and that makes her 'revival' so much more interesting as a payoff because the industry quite literally consumes her and pushed her into a cycle of feeding it back by "killing" her agent and Ruining Her Broadway Career
also body dysphoria is probably there too themes and such. This was Repressed Dreamer that said this.
This was what I was replying to about the staged death (they called me a genius lol)
Also, in Cannibal Freak, her throat looks mutilated, and her voice is different. I wonder if she still TECHNICALLY has the voice of an angel, the angel of death. Also could the scarring be from the rope I wonder…
In Ruin Your Broadway Career, there is the line “hungers only temporary” yet in Cannibal Freak…. She can’t satiate her hunger.
Additionally, there’s the fact that Kasane Teto, the voicebank used for this song, doesn’t have an official Vocaloid voicebank, while Reí, less popular, is getting one. She’s being overlooked… just like Elizabeth
First off, the piano keys in the intro. Pianos can symbolize wealth, status, and femininity… perhaps representing the status she so craved
She literally can’t fit in society’s “box” due to her height
Her earrings, although they remind of tetos twin drills, also resemble equal signs, a part of her design asking, is she equal to others? Does she measure up?
The cake- a birthday cake is, of course, to celebrate life… which the husband is actively taking away from her.
24 is also associated with balance… yet she has extremes.
Mirrors show up again here…
Also in the ate as big a plate as her… her hair becomes more brittle as she thins, like real malnourishment.
Her eyes remind me of Pomni in the drilled into her brain part
Also drilled… teto has drills…
And with the hands, one goes over her stomach… the focus of the song, her weight. And one over her mouth… to silence her?
I just hate the husbands behavior, how he turns on a dime when she walks out. I also don’t think it’s “her” dreams anymore.
She holds her mouth in the instrumental sequence… perhaps she was about to throw up?
She still seems to have some fight left in her, but not enough to make it out. She also has a wound on her head after the fall.
He is also missing a face running after her… perhaps how cruel he is, or death leaving him
Deaths figure beats like a heart, making me think of what happens next. Also, there is a reference to the famous Sicilian chapel ceiling with the hand touch, before the return.
Her face also looks strange in the outro
Skulls, of course, are “memento Mori” (remember you die) and a mortality reminder. She goes from skull to living, while he goes from living to skull. Perhaps the 24 was accurate after all. An exchange, one life for another.
Now for Cannibal Freak. I can’t help but wonder if she replaced her own hair due to the damage caused by malnutrition… I don’t think the blonde side is even her original hair, it’s too wavy.
The pearls- they’re strewn across a mirror, disconnected. Pearls can be innocence, purity, marriage, good fortune. All which she didn’t get
The blonde hair also has a lock that looks different. Did she get it from multiple sources?
When the mirror cracks… the cracks center at her throat
Balance is a theme again. Half male half female, half black half white, heterochromia, and even sanity vs insanity, who she was and who she is
The marks on her neck 100% look like rope marks, they resemble tallies. Or, alternatively, is she mutilating herself to count time?
The im freezing line- perhaps having a “cold heart”
The line, “to be thrown up on stage.” THROWN UP. And throwing up happens often with eating disorders.
I just noticed, when she is malnourished, she loses her blush, though she does get it back in the very very end.
I really enjoy the mix of how many lines rhyme
Part, start, other, heart- 3
Her her-2
Sing anything ring bring- 4
Her her- 2
Do, too-2
Kill, will- 2
Doll, other, falls, call- 3
Height, tight right- 3
Her, her- 2
Pain, again, drain, brain- 4
Her, her- 2
About, out- 2
Betrayal, wail, tale- 3
Do, too- 2
Kill, spill- 2
Severe, career- 2
Repetition- tried for every part tried to get her start
Her is also repeated quite often.
I must say, I love the play on words in the final line of the chorus, “No body’s made to suffer” Both being that no body, like human body, was made to suffer like that, and also this opposes the “the body’s built to suffer” line. And the line is also no human, nobody, is made to suffer.
I find the title tragic, as in the context of the end of the song, what “ruined” her Broadway career was finally retaliating. Also tragic that she never really had one.
When she’s on the plate, the only utensil is a knife, perhaps foreshadowing the one she stabs the husband with
The color symbolism is also incredibly well done, as simplistic as it is. I rather enjoy the limited color palette, as it allows focus on the actual events of the music video. For red- red symbolizes of course anger, love, and violence, all big themes in the music video. I very much enjoy how the meanings of the color red flow into each other, like how the “love” from the husband so quickly turns into anger when she walks out, and that anger so quickly leads to blood.
Another irony in the events after she returns… she eats her husbands heart, and hearts are so often associated with love… And even in one of the lines, its ironic as well, because “he won her heart” But in the end, she literally had his heart….
The focus on the heart also reminds me of one of the Beedle the Bard stories (as much as I hate Rowling, I feel like I need to point this out)
The story is The Hairy Heart. In the story, the man physically takes the girls heart to replace his own, which has been locked away for years. They both end up dead in the end.
In this one, the man metaphorically takes the girls heart, and they do both end up dead, but only his death is permanent.
Back to the color symbolism, gold represents of course, wealth, but in conjunction with that, success. And the thing she wanted most? Success
Red and gold combined also evokes a stage, as the classic color of curtains
Black is, of course, darkness and evil… but also power. Both characters that appear in black are powerful, with death literally being able to bring Elizabeth back to life, and the husband having power over her in life. (He has black hair)
The usage of black after the girls death is also very fascinating to me. It adds to the intensity of the scene while also showing how powerful the husband feels in that moment.
I feel like their hair colors automatically signify the power imbalance to the viewer subconsciously, with yellow being symbolic of more happy, energetic feelings. In color theory as well, when mixed, black easily absorbs or overpowers yellow, unless the yellow far outweighs the black.
I also just want to note the hatred that the “your call” line makes me feel towards the husband. Props to the creator for crafting that line in such a way that it made me INSTANTLY hate the husband. I could FEEL the manipulative intent behind those words. It wasn’t “her call,” but by offering the illusion of choice, he only lures her in further.
And another association with red: red flags. Which the husband has A LOT of.
Little fun facts: she is 7’1” according to the creator, and it is implied that she is bi or pan because the creator confirmed yuri happening at some point after the song in the comments
Did anyone notice anything else? (And if you did notice something I’d like to add it in my essay, with credit of course, as I want this to be a “master essay” on these songs! If you don’t want me to add your view/ interpretation please just let me know and I won’t!)
Im not diagnosed with narcolepsy, but I keep getting what I have seen described as “sleep attacks” The thing is, I normally take stimulant medication (I have adhd) and will sometimes get sleep attacks regardless. However, today I got more than 12 hours of sleep, but forgot to take my stimulant medication, and I’ve been in a state of near-falling asleep for hours, and if I sit down, I’ll start to get terrible drooping eyelids, and even when im standing up I get what I call my “doll eye” (my right eye keeps wanting to close and I have to consciously keep it open)
Also just so I don’t spam, does anyone with narcolepsy get like, realistic hallucinations as they fhave an attack, especially sitting up? Like, I’ll think I’m on my phone, or drawing, or doing something normal, and then I’ll wake up.
I’m so sorry if this is the wrong place for this
Has this ever happened to anyone else? I sneezed this morning. I had spinal fusion about 4 months ago, and this is the first time something like this has happened. I promised that I would do some work today, but said work involves my right arm, and I can’t turn my head or really raise my arm properly without pain now. My back has already been giving me issues so this just sucks even more. Does anyone know a way where I can still do what I promised to, or should I just try to suck it up? I already tried a heating pad, and that didn’t work
I accidentally traumatized her by playing Fear Assessment with her… so she gets to have my blanket for a while lol
