"Dad, can we eat this shark?" - Turning weird food rules into a comedy book

Explaining cultural food traditions to kids is... a journey. Usually, it's just a list of "No's."

I wanted to change that. I’m a professional game designer, and I’ve turned the concept of "Kosher" into a comedic "Is it or isn't it?" game.

It’s called "Is It Kosher?", and it’s a guide to the world's most exclusive animal club. We look at who’s in, who’s out, and why a pigeon wearing a hat is probably fine, but an ostrich is definitely not.

It’s light, it’s funny, and it’s designed to spark curiosity about cultural heritage without being heavy or preachy.

A note on the creative process: 🎨

As a professional creator, I wanted to bring this vision to life with high-end, vibrant visuals. I leveraged AI tools to speed up the illustration process, utilizing my background in animation and design to direct, edit, and refine every character to ensure they landed the joke perfectly. It’s a mix of ancient tradition and modern tech!

If you’re a parent of a "why?" machine, or just love quirky educational books, I’d love for you to check it out.

Hey everyone,

I recently finished a children’s book called “Is It Kosher?” and it turned out way more fun than I expected. Each spread introduces an animal and asks a simple question:
Is it kosher?

Then comes the answer: sometimes obvious, sometimes surprising, and sometimes… complicated.

The goal wasn’t to make something heavy or educational in a strict way, but to turn a set of rules into something curious, playful, and easy to understand for kids (and honestly, for adults too).

Some examples:

  • A giraffe? Surprisingly yes.
  • An ostrich? Not quite.
  • A grasshopper? That one gets interesting.

It’s written in a light, humorous tone and designed to spark curiosity more than anything else.

If that sounds like something you’d enjoy (or might want for your kids), you can check it out here:

Happy to hear thoughts, feedback, or even animal suggestions for a future edition 🙂

It started with random questions.

“Is a giraffe kosher?”
“What about an ostrich?”
“What about… a swordfish?”

After answering the same questions over and over, I decided to turn it into something more fun.

So I made a book: “Is It Kosher?”

Each page is one animal, one question, and a simple answer — sometimes surprising, sometimes funny, sometimes confusing in the best way.

The idea was to take something that usually feels complicated and make it feel playful and approachable.

Would love to know what’s the weirdest animal you’d ask about?
