Lately I’ve realized that a lot of modern horror games don’t really make me tense the same way older survival horror games did.

I’m talking about things like:

  • fixed camera angles,
  • limited saves,
  • strict inventory management,
  • backtracking,
  • limited ammo/resources,
  • and generally feeling underpowered.

Modern horror often feels more cinematic and action-heavy, but classic survival horror created tension just through uncertainty and vulnerability.

Weirdly enough, I’ve been playing a recent indie game inspired by old Resident Evil/Silent Hill design, and it reminded me how effective those older mechanics still are when done well.

Do you think this style of survival horror still has room to evolve today, or is it mostly nostalgia carrying it?
