I left work yesterday stressed. At home I was anxious and couldn’t let the stress go. Without thinking, I grabbed an onion and started slicing. Then I caramelized the onion with more butter than normal, and then I stood in the kitchen and ate that pile of sweet onion. Afterwards, I realized the stress was gone. This happens a lot. Cooking is therapy for me. Creating something tasty relaxes me and makes the nasty world go away. It might be an elaborate meal or a simple pasta dish. Or just a single onion. It doesn’t matter. It’s the process that forces me to forget or push aside the intrusive thoughts.
I’m curious. Do other people use cooking as therapy? Or do people find that cooking causes stress?
