Hello, I am a 28m in New York looking to get my own place. There’s a few issues with that:
Every housing place in my area close to my job is between 1.5-2k/mo for a studio or 1 bedroom.the only thing that is cheaper is if I apply for income based housing and they go off my paystubs per month.
I make around 4-5k a month after taxes but 70%+ of my income is in cash tips, therefore throwing a lot of potential landlords off.
I feel as if my only 2 options to get affordable housing is to do income-based-housing or move to out of state, which will in turn make me lose my job and start over finding a new job/career.
Currently live with my father for 500/mo, the mental agony I go through living here at this point I would pay every last dollar I make a month to move out and have my own place and peace of mind.love my father forever and happy he let me have a place over my head for my whole life, but it’s time to go.
I have one “friend” that gives me an opportunity to stay in a room with a shared living room and kitchen. He wants 1.2k/mo ( I am against doing that because I will just go spend between 300-800$/mo more and just get my own place, seems extremely unreasonable at that price point and he will not budge)
I have no access to “roommates” or anyone that would be willing to split a 2br if I even found one. All my “friends” are unemployed and live at their homes or already have their own living situations figured out. All of my roommmates to live with would essentially be a random off the internet. Not sure if I’m willing to do that.
My time is slowly running out. There will be a time where I mentally snap if I keep living in the same place. I don’t want to end up in the hospital or in jail. I just want to have my own place and some peace of mind. Which I don’t get in the living situation I’m in now
I have the money/cash saved to pay a security deposit + up to 6-12 months of rent at once with a lease. Issue is no one wants to take my money. They all think it’s illegal money.
