Thought I had my airport plan sorted. I didn’t.
Went to Ueno to catch the Skyliner to Narita, assuming I’d just grab a ticket and go. Nope. Completely full for the next hour. Standing there with luggage, watching time disappear, and realizing I’m about to miss my flight.
No choice—booked an Uber on the spot. ~$200 gone, just like that.
And here’s the catch: even if you book in advance, your actual departure is fixed to a specific train time that gets assigned when you pick up/confirm your ticket at the counter. If that train is full or the timing doesn’t work, you’re stuck waiting for the next one.
Yes, the ride itself is ~40–45 mins. But that’s irrelevant if you can’t get on the train you need. Add at least an extra hour buffer during peak time.
My last few hours turned into pure chaos—checking the clock every minute, running worst-case scenarios in my head. I made it to the airport and dropped my bags literally 5 minutes before cutoff. Five.
After an otherwise amazing Japan trip, this was the most unnecessary, stressful ending.
Don’t cut it close with Skyliner. Build buffer. Or be ready to pay for it.
