Explaining TBI to the Muggles

I suffered a serious TBI with PCS after a car accident, when I was hit from behind by an SUV while at a complete stop.

After four years of recovery, I began working part-time. It’s not particularly demanding work, but I’ve been quite successful at it over the past six months.

I’m finally trying to get back to work full time and have begun networking. What’s difficult is trying to explain to people what happened.

I say “I was in a bad car accident, suffered a brain injury, and it’s taken me four & a half years to recover.” I see them having some sort of reaction, but can’t “read” what they’re thinking.

I don’t know if there’s a better way to explain it. Perhaps it’s simply beyond their comprehension, or at least something so scary that they don’t want to think about it too hard.

I generally follow up with, “I consider it a sign of my resilience that I was able to recover as much as I have,” but again, I don’t know if there’s a better way to say any of it.
