Career in Victorian railways

Forgive me if this is the wrong subreddit for this topic. I’m interested in a career in railway labouring and was looking for some specific advice, examples and tips on what it might actually look like. Google can only get you so far so I thought this was the next best option.

As previously mentioned I’m interested in a career in railways labouring.
I do understand you need your white card and cert 3 in rail infrastructure is the general starting point but was curious on where to from there.

I’ve always seen the MTM incident response cars around the network and would potentially be interested in that work. There’s been a couple of doccos online with a day in the life story telling of the incident response team and it looked really appealing.
I assume it’s much like being a fire fighter, sitting around and waiting for something to happen. But what is required for that ? Do incident response workers need to be qualified in engineering and have an electrical apprenticeship in order to respond to any and all incidents or do they just put band aids on certain issues like track faults and such and then the overnight workers who have the proper engineering training take care of it properly?
What does the career progression look like, what are general daily operations ? and I assume it’s all shift work ?

I was also curious on a railway apprenticeship,
What railway track worker based apprenticeships are there around ? I’m probably more interested in a track work based apprenticeship as opposed to an electrical or engineering based one but I’m not overly against them either.
Is there a general track worker apprenticeship that you can do?
What does the working conditions, hours, career progression and career longevity look like for that ?

Lastly,
I was curious on what options the different employers might offer ? Is MTM, V/line or even Yarra trams the best way to go for a railway labouring apprenticeship? Or should I go through Pac Nat or another private company ? Anyone who has delt with either have any insights on the positives an negatives for both ?

If anyone who knows even a bit of info or personal insight, would be greatly appreciated. I hope my long ramble made a bit of sense and would love any advice anyone has to offer

Cheers!
