Currently trying to upgrade my tent from the Northface Stormbreaker 3 (6lbs) to either the Durston X-Mid 2 or the X-Dome 2. The only reason I'm considering the 2 versions of the tents is for trips with my partner.
I originally was convinced of purchasing the X-Mid 2 as it is a significant decrease in weight from my previous tent, great value for the money, and I always carry trekking poles with me on my backpacking trips.
However, after seeing some reviews of the X-Dome 2 I'm not so sure anymore. This indecision primarily comes from freestanding vs trekking poles. After much research it seems the X-Dome 2 is much more practical and simpler to setup in uncertain terrain.
I am from Los Angeles and have some backpacking trips planned for the summer in Yosemite, Sequoias, Big Sur etc. I can imagine the X-Dome 2 is easier to setup in these sometimes rockier terrain without much thought.
However, on trips without my partner I feel the X-Mid 2 would be much better as it is lighter and easier to pack into a bag than the X-Dome 2 on solo trips. (currently have a 48L bag but thinking of upgrading to 55L)
Looking for advice what tent would better suit my needs, anybody who owns both tents would be of great help, and anybody that backpacks with their partner thanks!
