KFOR soldier panning a trip to Kosovo

Hello! I wanted to ask about what it might be like for a former KFOR soldier to return and visit Kosovo today.

I was deployed there from June–December 1999 as a young U.S. Army infantry soldier. I’ve recently started looking into planning a trip back next year, and I would love to learn more about the country, culture, food, and history from people who actually live there.

I spent most of my time around Viti/Vitina and Miresh near Gjilan, so those areas are especially important to me and I would really like to revisit them.

One thing I remember very clearly from my time there was the kindness and hospitality people showed us, even during a difficult time. A local woman we affectionately called “Mom” used to make us pita (not sure if I’m spelling that correctly), along with tea and coffee, and I still remember how good it was almost 30 years later.

I would love recommendations for places to visit, foods to try, cultural or historical sites, and honestly just any thoughts or advice from locals about returning after so many years.

Thanks!
