Plywood chair mat question

Hey there I am a big guy and I read about using plywood to make a chair mat. I also want to use a piece of plywood to put my exercise bike on in the den. I plan to use a vinyl veneer. Not sure if that's the best choice? But my other question is I see plywood has a rough side and a smooth side, which side do you adhere the flooring to? Also how do I keep it from damaging the carpet considering there's going to be a lot of movement on it? Really hoping this project works so thanks in advance!
