Quests about what keeps player s coming back?

About 2 years ago i got back into ED after not playting pritty much since launch. at that time I enjoyed the expoloring aspect of the game, I now find my self with the space itch again a wanting to get back into the game again - I found myself about 60 jumps from civilisation. which i have spend the last week slow time returning to.

Ive now got ~750mil to do some upgrades (Krait Phantom)/ get a new ship and wondered what keeps players investested. Fancy trying to set myself a goal too and wouldnt know where to start.
