In general, you probably (or should) have a fire proof safe for your important documents like birth certificates, rental agreements, tax documents, etc. This can get pretty packed if you are also keeping several years worth of receipts, medical records, or more. Instead of storing a crap ton of paper, invest in a document scanner, and SD cards (keeping them separate and putting them in small envelopes labeled with the category of files on it could work for you), USB thumb drive, or if you have an ambitious budget, a solid state drive.
