Am I cooked??
I plan on applying this cycle, and I’ve already started to fill out my AMCAS/AACOMAS application forms. However, I wanna see how other people may judge my application because I’ll admit I have some weak points….
My stats:
- 22F / URM / FL resident
- Attended undergrad in Florida and graduated in December 2025, so I’m currently in a gap year
- Dual majored in Biomedical Science and Information Science
- Science GPA: ~3.4-3.5, Overall GPA: 3.7
- MCAT: I originally took the MCAT on 5/31/25, and my first score was 489 (which I realize is super low 😭) I’ve since retaken the exam as of 5/2/26, and I feel at least slightly better about this new attempt. My MCAT is the main thing holding me back, but I’m hoping my second score is an improvement :’)
Extracurriculars:
- Research assistant/coordinator for a cognition based lab. I’ve presented at several research conferences through this lab, and we’re in the process of writing a publication that’d I’d be the first author of (3000+ hours)
- Honors thesis on Patient-Provider relations with a different lab (350 hrs)
- Eboard of a mental health org at my uni (500 hrs)
- Volunteered as a patient companion at a cancer clinic (100 hrs)
- Also volunteered at my uni’s student health center for a semester (20 hrs)
- Did a virtual shadowing program for a semester as well (40 hrs) but since it wasn’t in person , IDK how favorably adcoms would view this
Employment:
- I started a full time job as a MA at a dermatology clinic last week, so I only have about 40 hours right now (LOL). I’ll be projecting much more than this once I finalize my application
- I worked in research computing / IT department at my uni for about 2.5 years. I helped with onboarding researchers to a database software widely used for clinical trials (1,650 hrs)
- Also worked at my uni’s alumni call center for a year (500 hrs)
I’m still trying to get my rec letters in order since I’ve had a few profs ghost / reject me, but so far I’ve at least secured a letter from one of my Bio profs. I should also be getting letters from the PI in the cognition research lab and one other prof at the minimum. I’m finalizing my personal statement as well.
As for my school list, my current plan is to apply to all schools in Florida (both MD and DO), but I haven’t decided which schools to apply to outside of Florida yet… any suggestions would be appreciated!
Aside from my MCAT, I think my application is at least *okay*, but again, I’m open to critiques on how to best shape my application 🥹
