Finished Sonny Boy a few days ago and I’ve been sitting with it. Thought I'd write a recommendation b/c it's underrated.
It's one of those shows where you slowly realize it's going to mess you up by the end. The plot is more or less simple: You follow this boy and his classmates as they gain powers in an "alternate dimension" they're trapped in.
The story reminded me a lot of NGE. It's a melancholic coming-of-age story, has interesting characters/dynamics, and some confusing moments. The visuals/animation were beautiful.
The show did really well in capturing that feeling of adolescence and the fear of what comes next. It's when you have that feeling that you want to be better, but you aren't really sure how. What elevated the show for me was Nozomi's character (deuteragonist/tritagonist). She's an incredibly optimistic character but in a grounded way. The show inspires you to take that next step.
I’ll admit it is confusing and the mechanics aren't always consistent, but the point of the show isn't to build a power system. The meaning of this story isn't told in those details.
Highly recommend and it's not that long!
