My first electric car and my first Genesis. I always do A TON of legwork when buying a car, my previous cars have been (2004 BMW M5, 2012 Cadillac CTS, 2016 BMW 640i Gran Coupe) Loved the 2 BMWs, felt the CTS was cheap after driving for a few months. Here's how the G80 Electrified is measuring up:
Chose this car because I wanted to go electric but couldn't find a true interior luxury electric sedan. Teslas feel empty inside and a bit cheap, I tried a Lyriq but can't trust Cadillac after previous bad experiences, I don't have a Lucid dealership near me and Porche Tycan was too cramped inside.
That being said, this forum does a great job of saying all the good stuff about it, and most of it is true. I find the seat to be very comfortable, a true luxury interior cabin, good range and charge time on the battery, and a laundry list of features as the 2023 Electrified only comes fully loaded which is excellent.
What this board tends to not mention is where the noticeable corners are cut. For a car that retails new at over $80,000, it is surprising to see cost cutting measures once you start looking a little closer (didn't notice during test drives or research but discovered over the first month):
1: Keyless Entry is only on the front doors. [I Can't emphasize how annoying this is. I have a small daughter and I need to pull a front door handle to unlock the car before getting into the back. All my other cars with keyless entry had it on all 4 doors, and this only having front is a daily frustration.]
2: No massage or leg extensions for front passanger. [Luxury cars like this while focusing on the driver shouldn't skimp on the front passanger. My wife would appreciate the massage function and the the leg extensions but they cut costs and don't have it for the front passanger which is odd and cheap]
3: No Driver/Front Passanger seperate ventilation fan speed. [While you can choose different temperatures between driver and front passanger, fan speed is set to only 1 speed for both and can't be adjusted seperately, just another quirky but annoying cost cutting item]
4: Driver Massage Seat Malfunctions. [If the drivers seat is set "wrong" the massage seat won't activate. Discovered this while troubleshooting, but known issue that the seat can't be reclined too far or have the lumbar in the "wrong" position. Very odd]
5: Processor Speed of Infotainment. [Takes awhile on startup and response times can be slow. It is obvious to me they cheaped out on the processor a bit.]
6: Lack of Battery % on Dash [Minor issue but in EVs I've learned quickly % charge is more important than "remaining mileage. Having to go into the EV screen every time to see it is annoying]
Complex Infotainmnet System. [This is the only one where I don't have a recommendation on how to make it better, but because there are so many options it feels like it is rather complex to navigate.... But I'm sure I'll get better with more time and practice so this could be a "me" issue not a car issue]
Cheap Door Sidetrim. Lots of things are leather wrapped which is nice, but the doors are "plether or soft plastic" again with a premium vehicle nothing should feel cheap and it feels again like something I'd find in a midline vehicle not a premium one.
I know this read like a complaint list. I want to be clear I'm enjoying the vehicle, but ultimately it does feel like a step down in interior luxury from my BMW 6 Series. Exterior styling I love. I shouldn't notice this much corner cutting in a car trying to compete with BMW and Mercedes. We'll see how I feel at 6-months.
