South Dakota flowering crab
This is my grandmother's flowering crabapple tree. Isn't she amazing? If someone knows the variety that would be awesome but I don't have a close-up of the flowers on it. My question is does the low branch union of the trunk of this tree come from age, or is it the variety? I've looked at young flowering crab apple trees and their branches begin between 3 and 4 ft off the ground, but that's with a trunk that's only a couple of inches in diameter.
That was the house my parents brought me to when I was born, 62 years ago, and the tree was there when they bought the property a year before, but Dad doesn't really remember how big it was then (Dad is 86 and still goes a horseback riding almost every day). When I was three my parents took over the farm and we moved out there.
I know, after watching over my family for over 60 years she is approaching the end of her life. Just a few years ago she was much fuller in the top so I guess that might be a sign? Grandma passed away in 2021 at 103. My cousins who still live in our hometown always take a picture when she's flowering and send it out to everyone. I'd like to plant some of her relatives on my property. If I'm blessed with Grandma's genetics, if I plant now, I might still live to see them mature, a little. LOL
