Hey everyone! I’m trying to decide between Amherst College and UNC Chapel Hill (Honors/Carolina Scholar) for pre-med and would really appreciate any honest perspective from people who’ve been through something similar.
For context, I’m planning to go pre-med and I care a lot about GPA, research, clinical exposure, and overall med school readiness.
Right now, I’m kind of weighing Amherst as a smaller, more tight-knit environment where it might be easier to build close relationships with professors, potentially get stronger rec letters, and have more individualized support. I’ve also heard it can be a bit easier to maintain a high GPA there, and there are still funding opportunities for summer research or independent projects. On the other hand, it seems like there may be fewer on-campus clinical opportunities during the school year, a smaller research ecosystem compared to large universities, and I’d need to be very proactive about finding outside hospitals/internships. The cost is also a real consideration, and I’m wondering if that adds up in a meaningful way given med school later.
With UNC, the biggest draw is definitely the full ride, plus access to the UNC Health system which seems like a strong advantage for clinical exposure. It’s also a large research university with a lot of labs, funding, and structured opportunities. Honors seems like it helps with smaller classes and extra advising/support too. The tradeoff seems like bigger intro classes, more self-navigation required to find opportunities, and potentially being harder to stand out compared to a smaller school.
What I’m really trying to figure out is whether the smaller environment at Amherst actually leads to meaningfully better pre-med outcomes, or if UNC’s resources and full ride outweigh that. Also how much I should realistically weigh cost vs the “ease” of GPA/support environment.
Would really appreciate any thoughts from people who’ve had to make a similar decision or have experience at either school.
