Curious as to why subs have been banned from a school/district. Were you notified? Did the school admin have a conversation with you prior? Do you feel it was justified or completely ridiculous?

With this whole “sub shortage” it’s amazing to me that there is such a high turnover rate.

I want to preface this with I have another job, but I was subbing for extra money while I was in grad school and was waiting on licensure. So, I’m not reliant on this particular side gig now that I’m fully licensed; However, the position I hold now is one of professionalism with a strong ethical code foundation that I hold in high regard.

Thus, the reason for my termination (and I’m going to be a little vague here) was one sentence about a parent complaint to the building administration. Without full context of what transpired, it not only allowed for termination, but could be misconstrued.

I had to email the substitute HR team, go through my ethical code, and change the narrative that was factual rather than baseless. I know I won’t be allowed back in this district and quite frankly, it was by far the most hostile environment I’ve ever been in compared to other districts.

I have had students come up to me, tell me the teachers do not like me because I’m “too nice.” Then, I’ve had several instances of passive-aggressive behavior by the administrators, such as “The kids can smell blood on you,” or not talking to me when I am walking past them and say hello (like a scene from mean girls), or stating that I do not discipline at all or I disciplined too much. I’ve applied for two part time positions in the district and have been denied both.

Substitutes operate in a world of ambiguity and without clear expectations, it ultimately leaves a person up for failure. And I need to operate in a place of clear expectations.

Moreover, my children are students in this district. Now, I am concerned that I cannot be a parent volunteer for several of their upcoming activities.

It’s truly a mess. I suppose you live and you learn, but it’s hurtful nonetheless. Especially when I was operating from a place of good intentions.
