Veterinary surgeon (Greece/UK) looking to pivot into EU institutions / DG SANTE /realistic entry routes?

Hi everyone,

I’m a veterinarian (DVM) originally from Greece, currently working in the UK with around 10 years of professional experience (mainly clinical, including small animal and broader practical veterinary work). I also hold British citizenship, so EU + UK mobility are both relevant for me.

Lately I’ve been seriously exploring whether there’s a realistic pathway from veterinary medicine into the EU institutional / public health / policy ecosystem (DG SANTE, TRACES, animal health, food safety, import controls, regulatory affairs, etc.), rather than staying purely in long-term clinical practice.

I’d really appreciate honest advice from people who understand the “EU bubble” better.

My main questions:

For a vet with mostly clinical experience, what are the most realistic entry points?

Is DG SANTE / TRACES / policy assistant / contract agent / temporary agent a plausible route?

How important is a Master’s (Public Health, EU Affairs, Epidemiology, Regulatory Affairs)? Is it essential or just helpful?

Would EPSO AD5 / generalist competitions be realistic, or should I focus more on niche animal health / food safety pathways first?

Which skills matter most for making myself more competitive?

Policy writing?

Regulatory knowledge?

Epidemiology / public health?

Data analysis?

Are there contractor / consultancy routes (Brussels ecosystem) that can realistically serve as stepping stones?

For someone trying to pivot without “starting life from zero,” what would be the smartest strategic path?

My broader goal:

I’m trying to build a more sustainable long-term career around: animal health + public health + EU systems + policy/governance rather than remaining only in clinical veterinary work forever.

I’m especially interested in hearing from:

vets in EU institutions

DG SANTE / TRACES / EFSA people

policy officers

contractors who entered from non-traditional routes

I’m not looking for fantasy or prestige — just realistic pathways, skills gaps, and practical next steps.

Thanks a lot — genuinely appreciate any insight.
