Installing trellis/ scrog net at beginning of flower?

Installing trellis/scrog net beginning of flower?

I am on my first grow. I just flipped to flower after a long veg recovering from underfed plants. During veg I topped all the plants, bent the main stalks about 90 degrees, and did some light LST to spread the canopy out. Which resulted in a lot of tops emerging. The plants are finally healthy, praying hard, and starting stretch now.

I want to install a trellis but my goal is not a hardcore SCROG where I weave every branch perfectly. I mainly want to spread the canopy a little more during stretch, control a few dominant tops, support branches later in flower, and keep airflow decent.

I was thinking of keeping the net a little higher and only tucking a few aggressive tops under while letting most of the canopy naturally grow up into the net and find their own squares for support later in flower. I’m worried my stems may not be as strong from deficient veg period and mainly want bud support in the end. Does that sound like a solid approach for where I’m at, or should I be dropping the net lower and tucking more aggressively?

Or leave the trellis alone for a first run?

When to flip?

First time grow. After a very long veg full of stalled plants and learning experiences, I’ve finally gotten my deficient plants back on track. They’ve all been topped and lightly LST’d, and I’m planning to drop a trellis net and SCROG them when I flip to flower.

They’ve now had a week of proper feeding with the Fox Farms trio and Cal-Mag. In just the last week they’ve exploded with growth. Color has improved significantly, posture is better, stems are thickening up, and overall they look like completely different plants.

I don’t want to wait too long and end up with an unmanageable tent, but I also don’t want to send them into flower before they’re fully healthy.

Any advice is appreciated.

It’s been a long veg and a serious learning experience, almost 10 weeks. Despite doing my due diligence, I still made a ton of mistakes and had to adjust along the way. I was told at the hydro shop that my soil was “water only to harvest,” but my plants were clearly starving no matter how much compost tea they had me throw at them. I finally went with my gut and picked up the Fox Farm trio and Cal-Mag, and after just one feeding three days ago, they seem to have taken off. They’ve grown more in the last two days than they did in the previous two weeks, or at least it feels that way. Leaves are darkening, looking less washed out, and reaching toward the light way more, stems feel less flimsy The plants just look way happier.

I want to give them at least one more feeding in veg before flipping to flower so they have more time to recover from deficiencies and show consistent, healthy growth. At the same time, I don’t want to overshoot and let them get too big, since I’ve had them in veg so long already. which is honestly a good problem compared to where I was a couple weeks ago. This is easily the best they’ve looked all grow.

I’m thinking about flipping in about a week, maybe a couple days after the next feeding. They’ve all been topped, and I did some LST to even out the canopy, and defoliated all the ugly yellow drooping leaves blocking growth tips. which seems to have worked well. I strapped my leggy White Widow the fuck down. Everything is sitting a little more than 12 inches tall after LST with plenty of vertical space left, but the lateral space is starting to fill in. 4x4 AC Infinity tent. Running 1 plant of white widow and 3 plants of a granddaddy purple x purple caper.

Any advice is appreciated. I’m just glad they’re stabilizing and recovering.

Has anyone done this? I have self-watering bases and I’m pivoting to the Fox Farm trio on my current soil grow in 5-gallon fabric pots (four plants). I know Big Bloom should be top-fed since it’s organic, but how are people using Grow Big, Tiger Bloom, and Cal-Mag with a reservoir system?

The base holds about a gallon. Do you keep it filled with a nutrient solution, or alternate between a gallon of nutrients and then a gallon of plain water once it runs dry?

If not, I’ll probably ditch the bases and just top water. This is my first grow, and my plants are currently underfed and a bit stunted since I haven’t been feeding consistently. The bases have taken the guesswork out of watering, which tripped me up early on, so I’d like to keep using them if it’s feasible and simple.

Thanks for any feedback!
