I will try to provide as much information as possible, but if more is needed please let me know. Sorry for the long read but I really want to be sure of this.
I have a senior cat who has been not the same since Friday evening. I noticed she vomited after eating her morning wet food. She also has been constipated. Later on at night, I noticed she started to groan. I’ve never really heard her do that before. She seemed uncomfortable. She didn’t even lay on me and purr which she always does. Saturday morning she vomited after her morning wet food too. She did come lay and purr on me so I thought she might be feeling better.
Later on in the day, she started groaning again and seemed uncomfortable. I thought maybe she could be constipated and uncomfortable from that so she’d gotten MiraLAX. She had been laying down all day and didn’t even get up to go potty so I’d take her to the litterbox then she welt to pee. She did not even eat her night wet food which is VERY unlike her. I called the ER vet and got her in. He did bloodwork and found that she was anemic (previous bloodwork July 2025 she was slightly anemic). He was worried about her kidneys/liver, but those levels were normal. He gave her 200mL of fluids (keep in mind she is a tiny cat and weights only a little over 6lbs) and a cerenia injection and told us to try to get her in on Monday and our normal vet if she doesn’t get better.
Sunday, she was still lethargic and would only get up to move her laying position on her pillow. I fed her small frequent meals during the day and she didn’t puke. I still had to take her to the litterbox. She did poop later on in the day (first time in a few days) it was small and hard. Still groaning and seemed very uncomfortable. She did not eat her night time wet food. Was walking weird but I didn’t know if that was because the 200ml of fluids was still absorbing from Saturday night.
Monday, she had possibly vomit (90% sure it was her) with hair and small bright red splotches of blood and a little bit of yellow-ish mucus. I had to drop her off at the vet so they could see her since they were busy. She did go to the litterbox herself over Sunday night though and ate some wet food in the morning Monday. The vet did a quick ultrasound scan and found some free fluid around her liver lobes. Did an X-ray as well and he didn’t find any masses. He did say her right side of her heart sounded somewhat worse (she had a slight murmur on her right side/arrhythmia in July 2025). We don’t know why she has fluid though. Mentioned maybe it could be her heart and we could do a proBNP test, but it could be false positive. We could try to take the fluid out under sedation and send it out to the labs, but I cannot afford it and she is older and small. We elected to try a small dosage of furosemide once daily for a few days .. so far she got a dose Monday night and Tuesday night.
When I picked her up later in the day Monday, she seemed better and was walking around herself getting water, going potty, and eating. Though she is still groaning and seems uncomfortable. She is still not herself, she won’t even lay on me and purr which she did everyday. This is all so sudden to me since she was perfectly fine before this. I adopted her and her senior brother from a shelter in July and I would hate to see how her brother would be without her, but I don’t want her to be in pain. Is there anything else I can do for her? Is the symptoms and what has shown in these tests so far causing her a lot of pain?
Thank you for reading this all to help me and my baby, it’s much appreciated. I love her so much.
