Help Desk made me want to slam my head in a door.

The other day I was having issues with the registers being slow. Checked for updates (24hr store needs to do it manually) throughout my shift (11pm-7am) with no updates available. That's usually the reason they would be doing that.

Around 2:30am the registers would let me sign in, but I couldn't do anything else, couldn't press any of the buttons, couldn't scan anything, couldn't open the register, etc. Restarted them twice, with no avail. Called the Help Desk (1st time) and was told there was an update in progress for the fuel pumps on the office computer. I informed them I didn't accept any updates and that updates to the pumps wouldn't take more than 5 minutes, 15 minutes at most, but it's been more than 30 minutes since this became a real issue.

They told me to just wait a bit for it to finish, meanwhile I have to keep turning away customers (Despite leaving a sign on the doors), who were being incredibly rude, like it's my fault they couldn't buy their slushie at 3am. After 15 minutes I asked if there was a possible error in the update, they said no. Then they told me to call back in 30 minutes if it still hasn't fished yet.

30 minutes and multiple irritated customers later, nothing has changed, so I called the Help Desk (2nd time). A different person picked up, told them the situation, and they told me that there is an update for the fuel pumps that is currently still updating. I told them that we waited and waited for no sign of progress, and I asked if there was an error with the update, which they said no. They told me to wait 10-15 minutes and if that doesn't do anything then they'll try to figure something out. Decided to put it on speaker while I try to get other stuff done, checked 5 minutes later only to find that they hung up on me.

I decided to lock the doors and turn the parking lot lights off till I got that settled. Because customers either didn't read the sign, or they would ask me if the could just use cash or if they could just give me the money. Even with the outside lights off and being almost pitch black people still kept trying to get in, with one customer honking his horn for a couple of minutes.

Called the Help Desk (3rd time) with a different person. Told them I understand that they are just doing their job and my attitude has nothing to do with them specifically, but this has been going on for an hour and a half to two hours, morning rush is starting to come in and something needs to be done. NO I'm not waiting for the update, NO I'm not going on hold, NO there has to be some sort of error. They decided to restart the fuel pump system (they didn't do it before because it could mess up the systems even more) and after 5 minutes, the registers started working again.

Apparently, there was a problem with the update were everytime it got to the final stage of finishing, it would fail then immediately restart. So, after a forced restart, it allowed the update to finish, and cause the registers to work again.

So, in essence, I wasted almost 2hrs of my shift when I was already behind because of the previous shift, had to deal with customers being absolute jackasses, and I had to be the IT guy, for nothing?
