Greyhawk-to-Homebrew: How I blended the Velaeri with D&D Basic Immortals ideas to create Avatars of the Seasons
Quick update on the Hawklands Campaign Primer - An Alternate Greyhawk Campaign Setting - I finally completed the Wind Giant series (The Wind Giants - An Overview - Demi-God Avatars)- taking the old Greyhawk Oeridian agricultural gods of the seasons/weather/wind (the Velaeri) & mixing them with a more demi-god avatar approach (harkening back to elements from the basic D&D Immortal set).
The result - the Seasonal Winds & Weather themselves are divine, they change their shape every few centuries (or sometimes only decades) with new avatars & characters at high levels can "ascend" to be the next Seasonal avatar.
This get's some fun pairing of "old school content" - where I was able to take the historical Greyhawk NPC & artifacts lore (Archmage Philidor & the swanmay Sharnalem, Black Razor for the Telchur avatar, etc.) & recast in the "avatar ascending to demi-god" model. In the end, a great way to "retire" high-level PCs in a NPC impact arc (so you wanna be a god? Just defeat the current Wind Giant avatar...).
