How to fix a MyBook WD Green hard drive (PCB 2060-771945-001 REV P1) that shuts off your PSU
Symptoms:
- MyBook doesn't start
- When I plug the WD green in a PC, PSU shuts off immediately
- PCB looks visually fine, no burn marks
- PCB alone (disconnected from drive mechanics) still kills the PSU
Root cause: A blown TVS diode (not visibly blown) on the PCB, creating a short circuit that trips the PSU's protection.
Fix:
- Locate D3 and D4 near the SATA power connector (D1/D2 pads are empty on this revision — that's normal)
- With the PCB unplugged, test each with a multimeter in continuity/resistance mode
- The blown one will show near-zero resistance in both probe directions
- Simply desolder and remove the shorted diode — no replacement needed
- The drive should now power up normally
Note: Removing the TVS diode means the drive loses overvoltage protection on that rail, so use a good quality PSU going forward.
