Team is making us do an “interactive lunch”...

My team is making us attend “interactive lunch” where we’re expected to bring our own food and do structured social/team activity during our unpaid lunch break.

Anyone else forced to do this shit or is it just us in QLD DETSI?

Racist comment at a rental inspection and I didn’t know how to respond

I’m Asian Australian (Chinese background), born and raised here. I went to a rental inspection recently and while I was waiting, I overheard a White couple behind me saying stuff like “Asians are buying up everything” and joking that I’d probably “pay six months upfront”. I'm guessing he didn't think I'd understand him, no idea why.

I wasn’t even doing anything except standing there like everyone else, but it instantly made me feel like I didn’t belong. The agent definitely heard it too and just ignored it like it was normal.

I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to cause a scene or risk getting treated differently, but it’s been bothering me since. How do people usually respond to this kind of thing without escalating it?

Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about a potential food business idea in Australia and wanted to get some honest opinions.

When it comes to Westernised Asian food (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese etc.), what do you think is the biggest issue?

G’day legends,
I’m looking at getting into ocean kayak fishing in Far North Queensland (Australia) and I’m considering the Zerek 3.2m fishing kayak (the one sold at Anaconda).

Zerek is a pretty well-known / trusted Aussie brand, but I’m still unsure if 3.2m is enough kayak for what I want to do.

My plan is to launch from Palm Cove (near Cairns) and fish around Double Island / nearshore reef areas. Not planning crazy offshore missions, but definitely dealing with wind, chop, swell, tide/current, and occasional beach launches.

Just wondering if anyone here has experience with the Zerek 3.2m or similar sized yaks in ocean conditions.

Questions:

Is 3.2m too short for coastal reef fishing / open water paddling?

How does it go in chop/swell and wind?
Is it stable enough for anchoring / drifting while fishing?

Would you trust it for a trip like Palm Cove → Double Island on a good weather day?

Are there any better options around the same price in Australia?

Any advice appreciated, especially from other Aussie kayak fishos. Cheers!

Kayak specs (from Anaconda listing):
Length: 3.25m (advertised as 3.2m)
Width: 86cm
Height: 38cm
Weight: 28kg
Load capacity: 180kg
Material: HDPE
Rudder: adjustable foot-controlled rudder
Seat: adjustable seat with high/low position
Rod holders: 4 flush-mounted rod holders
Storage:
Front hard shell hatch: 30L
Rear storage under mesh: 33L
Rear twist top 4” hatch
Centre console storage: 8.6L + built-in fish measuring ruler
Paddle holder, tackle box holder w/ bungee, carry handles, staggered footrests

Hey legends, I’m looking at getting into ocean kayak fishing up in far north Queensland. My plan is to launch off Palm Cove and paddle out toward Double Island / inner reef water to fish reef edges and deeper spots.

The kayak I’m considering is the Zerek 3.2 m fishing kayak, but I’m not 100 % sure it’s the right fit for offshore/reef conditions.

Main Questions:

Is a 3.2m kayak like this safe/practical for coastal ocean fishing around FNQ?

How would it handle wind/chop/swell and tidal run between Palm Cove and Double Island?

Is it stable enough for anchoring, drifting, and landing fish offshore?

Would you personally trust it for that sort of trip?

Safety setup – What essentials would you recommend taking for that sort of trip?

Alternative kayaks – Are there better choices around the same price that would be more suited to FNQ ocean fishing?

Any insights from people who fish up here or do ocean kayak trips regularly would be hugely appreciated. Cheers!

Has anyone else noticed how undiverse the environmental sector is (consulting, ecology, government, etc)?

In Australia at least, it feels overwhelmingly dominated by White folk, like 99% from my experience, and the industry can be pretty cliquey and private school-like. It’s weird because environmental sector is usually seen as a “progressive” field that bangs on about the importance of diversity in nature, but the workforce is the complete opposite. Academia on the otherhand seem way more diverse.

Why do you think that is?

Is it a pipeline issue, hiring bias, or just an old-school culture? And for anyone from a minority background, what has your experience been like?
