Has Disney always depended on other people’s stories?

I was thinking about this recently even a lot of the classic Disney princess movies were based on older fairy tales and stories that already existed, right? Like stories from writers such as Hans Christian Andersen or the Brothers Grimm.

And now Disney keeps making live-action versions of their animated movies. So it made me wonder: has Disney always kind of depended on adapting existing stories instead of creating completely original ones?

Not saying it in a hateful way, I’m genuinely curious. Because when people criticize Disney now for remakes and “running out of ideas,” weren’t they technically doing adaptations from the beginning too? Or is there a difference between adapting old folklore vs remaking your own movies?
