Dead spots on lawn because of landscaping rocks. Excessive amount huge-small. Is what I have done and plan to do correct so far.? South Lake Tahoe CA

I am new to lawn care. There is a bunch two big dead spots on my lawn near the path where an excessive amount of landscaping rocks have poured into lawn and deep into the soil and under topsoil we put sod over the lawn last year and now this spot won't grow so I have dug up about 6 inches down and I plan to break break up the soil and put it back, but there is a lot of rocks so wondering if it's OK to put the soil back with the rocks or is it a necessity to remove all of them before I put it back?
