Me (F30) was recently diagnosed with proctitis - I was seeing a private GI specialist through my work insurance in the UK but I left that job so had to be discharged to my GP.
I was put on mesalamine suppository and found it stopped the blood in my stool immediately which was great! I thought amazing news, and am currently on 1 x nightly dose. But over the last month, I’ve noticed that I have been getting a side effect and that perhaps it’s not as helpful as I thought.
I’m still getting awful stomach cramps and yo-yoing bowel habits but more importantly (and embarrassingly) I’ve found that when I pass wind/fart, that it’s oily? Even when I’ve not eaten anything particularly oily nor fatty!
I get so horribly embarrassed by it, it’s not every time but it does happen daily. I’m so utterly embarrassed and scared, that I immediately run to the bathroom just incase it is an oily fart because it then lingers on my underwear and clothes.
I’ve already cried to my fiancé so many times about it because it’s so embarrassing & I’m just dreading the day it happens in public and I’m not in the comfort of my own home and can shower or change clothes. It makes me terrified for long days out! If I do, I end up wearing a sanitary pad just incase which again isn’t ideal but a temporary solution.
There was a few weeks between the first months dosage and the second - which time I found that issue subsided, the bleeding didn’t come back right away.
So I guess my ask is: is this a normal side effect? Should I be pushing my GP for an alternative as it’s impacting my day to day life? Or should I just get over it lol
Thank you in advance because these forums have been a godsend for someone newly going through this, pretty much solo as a GI waitlist to see a doctor is now 6-8 months
