Advice Needed- Police at my Apartment for Distrubance despite Living Alone
I need advice, because I’m truly confused by this whole situation. For context, I am a 30 year old female who lives completely alone. I have 2 cats, but no roommates, no significant other, and no friends that come over to my apartment. I will once in a while have a family member visit my apartment. I have lived in this apartment for 2 years now with zero issues. This is a small apartment building that stays pretty quiet. Majority of the tenants here are young adults who stick to themselves.
This morning at 9:00 AM, I was abruptly woken up by 2 police officers banging on my apartment door. At first, I thought it was the maintenance guy, but then saw the police officers through the peep hole. I was shocked because I thought maybe something bad had happened.
I enter the hallway to talk them (basically half asleep still) and they tell me someone had reported my apartment unit for yelling, fighting, and a domestic disturbance. The officers ask me who else is in the apartment unit. That’s when I explain that it is only me and no other guests are in my unit. The officers repeatedly questioned me if someone was in my unit, and I kept explaining that its ONLY ME. I said “its only me and my 2 cats here. I was sound asleep.” They then ask me if I’m sure I don’t have any other pets. I was baffled.
I was truly completely alone, completely asleep, my cats were asleep next to me, no TV or music was on. My unit was quiet as possible.
Because I am on the building’s top floor…the only possible people who could have called the police to my unit are my downstairs neighbors. I have never talked to them before. I would consider myself an extremely considerate upstairs neighbor.
Lastly, please know that the police only knocked on my unit to ask about this disturbance. No other apartment units. The officers left afterwards, but didn’t seem to believe me. I’m so confused.
I have called the landlord to explain the situation. He said it was odd. He confirmed no noise complaints have been filed on me. I just wanted to clear my name with the landlord, basically.
So my question is- what happened here? How can a loud domestic disturbance happen when it was just me sleeping? Do I go knock on these downstairs neighbors door to ask them?
I don’t run into situations dealing with bad neighbors or the police in my life. So I’m pretty upset, angry, and overall confused!
