Speed Trap Town

Hi, British fan here and apologies if this has been asked and answered already but I couldn’t find it… the line “those 5A bastards run a shallow cross” is an American football reference, I get that, but is a shallow cross seen as somehow unfair or not within the spirit of the game?

We have plenty of examples over here of things in sport that are technically within the rules but seen as “not on” and I was just wondering if that’s part of the narrator’s frustration here. Or is it simply that the play was successful and the bigger, better-resourced school pulled it off?

Cheers, Cousins… can’t wait to see Jason in Manchester next month!

EDIT: Thank you all. For the record, examples in UK sport include setting up a soccer team defensively and trying to score a single goal on the counter; and a cricket team batting on for the draw rather than declaring and going for the win. Both are perfectly legitimate strategies which tend to be frowned upon by rivals when they work. Something about the bitter sadness in the rest of the lyrics made me think something like that would be a good fit.
