If You're Gluten Free, Eat in The Dining Rooms

EDIT: I had no clue so many people get up in arms about something that does not impact their life in the slightest. I've gotten several messages about gluten allergies not existing...Blah blah blah.

You're right. I have a severe gliadin allergy. I cannot have wheat, rye, barley, spelt, malt etc. How do you think it would go for me trying to explain that at a restaurant.... "Gluten Allergy" is a grab all and how I (and many others) have to communicate our dietary restrictions to ensure food is safe for us to eat. We have no choice but to reduce it to a commonly (mostly) understood restriction.

And for those saying it doesn't exist and it's a fad etc. This is something that has turned my life upside down. I went from loving food to having to check everything to make sure that it wont rebel against me. It is painful. It hurts. And, like many, it took a long time for medical doctors to identify what was making me sick. So, if the advice I shared below can help you, enjoy. If not and you can freely enjoy gluten, wheat, barley etc etc etc.. keep it moving.

END EDIT

Im currently on a NCL and I have a non celiac gluten allergy. The sit down dining rooms are great with allergies (you pre order your meals the night before.) No complaints that a little salt and pepper cant fix. GF bread is also good. And they are proactive when it comes to allergies - ex. I asked for a traditionally GF sauce and they let me know their variation wasnt GF. They also have a dedicated GF kitchen...I sing their praises.

However, I am beat and wanted to take something with me to the room (room service food quality is poor and options limited) so I headed to the buffet for the first time. (You cannot get food from any other restaurant to go, even when it is super quiet.) And while there are options... they aren't good. And the buffet team isnt proactive in telling you that certain components aren't GF. Ex I asked for a GF veggie burger. The bread was GF but the pattie wasnt. Thankfully I could tell the brand from looking at it. The buffet fries also taste oily and the GF dessert was cold, crumbly and sad.

So, if you're planning to cruise with NCL and are gluten free... skip the buffet.
