Building a BIM/CAD portfolio for an apprenticeship - need advice

Hi everyone,

I’m currently going through a career change and I’m trying to become a BIM Modeler / CAD Draftsman.

Right now I’m learning software on my own (mainly Revit, AutoCAD and Archicad) while looking for an apprenticeship/work-study position. Since I don’t yet have formal education or professional experience in the field, I want to build a clean and professional portfolio to demonstrate my current level and motivation.

My idea is to create complete architectural drawing / BIM project sheets showing plans and building drawings made by myself, but I honestly don’t know what the most professional way to present them is.
For people already working in BIM, architecture or drafting:
• What types of plans should I include?
• Floor plans only, or sections/elevations/details too?
• What kind of dimensions and annotations are usually expected?
• Which views are the most relevant to showcase skills?
• What information should absolutely appear on sheets?
• How would you organize a portfolio to make it look professional and “industry-ready”?
• Are there common mistakes beginners make when presenting BIM/CAD work?

My goal is to create a complete portfolio that can genuinely show my drawing and software skills despite being self-taught and still in career transition.

Any advice, examples, references or portfolio standards would help me a lot.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I’m currently considering a career change and exploring opportunities in the BIM field, specifically as a BIM modeler / CAD technician (dessinateur projeteur).

I’d really appreciate some insight from professionals in the industry regarding the actual work rhythm. From your experience, is this role typically associated with long, intense working hours and tight deadlines, or is it generally more balanced and manageable on a day-to-day basis?

For context, I come from a professional background where the workload and pace were consistently very high and, over time, not really sustainable. This is an important factor in my career transition, as I’m looking for a healthier and more balanced work environment.

I understand that workload can vary depending on the company, project phase, and country, but I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what to expect before making the transition.

Any feedback, personal experiences, or advice would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance!
