Irish History: How do I identify the "Killough, Westmeath" in Peg Plunkett's 18th memoirs?
In her memoirs, Margaret Leeson (Née Peg Plunkett), mentions she "drew [her] first breath at Killough, in the county of Westmeath, where my father Matthew Plunket possessed a handsome property near Corbet's-town."
Even going back to early 19th century maps the borders of Westmeath have barely moved, and there's no "Killough" in Westmeath. Corbetstown is 25km away from the closest Westmeath border (near Drummin East) which feels slightly at odds as well - though the fact that she has a sister living Tullamore means she at least has relatives in County Offaly (and her sister's husband from Kinnegad, which further points us towards Offaly). Further confusion is sown by the reference to "living in a close intimacy with the two sons and daughter of Mrs. Darcy, of Corbet's-town (our nearest neighbour)."
I've ruled out Killua for now because that's up near Clonmellon, Killulagh feels like a better candidate but that feels like a big leap in spelling (but could be explained through linguistic drift), describing Killeagh as "near Corbetstown" feels extremely odd since it's between Mullingar and Athlone, leaving us with Killagh which is still at best 30km from Corbetstown but is the closest and bears some resemblance to "Killough" as she describes it in her memoirs.
So I'm at a bit of a loss. Where was Peg Plunkett born?
