Long time multiday hiker. Did the full Camino in ‘99, so this hike appeals to me. Have done a bucket list 4-7 night hike every year since ‘95. Usually with mates I’ve known since kindergarten.
Last few hikes (Inca Trail, Rockwall Trail in Banff, Overland Track in Tasmania) have been off the hook. Looking at next year’s hike and Kumano Kodo is top of list. However, wives have expressed interest in coming.
I’ve taken exactly one multi day hike with my wife - Queens Charlotte’s trail on NZ South Island 20 years ago and it was great, but tough for her. Doesn’t really like roughing it.
Most of my recent dozen hikes involve not showering for days, carrying everything, and generally not caring about manners or cleanliness.
I’ve heard Kumano Kodo is staying at inns with onsens at every stop.
My question is - has anyone man done this hike with a wife/partner who isn’t into really into hikes and what was your experience? Is accommodation above Camino albergue/hostel level? I’m not really worried about the physical aspect of the hike, but rather accommodation, general expectation of cleanliness, and ease (or lack there of) for someone who doesn’t hike.
Having written all this, I realize how stupid I sound.
Any advice is much appreciated.
TIA
