A heartfelt request from Slovenia: Our "dual" language as a gateway to the Slavic world🇸🇮🦉
Dear Duolingo Team,
First of all, thank you. Thank you for making language learning accessible, engaging, and entirely free for millions around the globe. Your mission truly brings the world closer together, one lesson at a time.
I am writing to you from a small, beautiful country tucked between the Alps and the Mediterranean – Slovenia. We have a rich culture and a deeply unique language. What many people don't realize is that Slovenian serves as a fascinating and accessible gateway to the Slavic world.
While it shares strong linguistic roots and a high degree of similarity with Russian and other Slavic languages, making it an attractive next step for millions of learners who already study those paths on Duolingo, it also maintains its own rare charm. For instance, Slovenian is one of the very few languages in the world that still uses the "dual" grammatical form – a specific form used only for exactly two people or things. It is truly a language built for romance and deep connection!
While we are a nation of just two million people, we have a huge heart and a profound love for learning. Adding Slovenian to Duolingo would not only preserve a beautiful piece of European cultural heritage but also allow descendants of Slovenian immigrants, expats, and thousands of tourists to truly connect with our home.
We know that developing a new course is a massive undertaking. But please know that there is a deeply passionate and educated community here in Slovenia that would be thrilled to support this initiative in any way possible to make it a reality.
