Tarmac SL8: There is some play after I have reinstalled Rapide handlebar and top cap after having removed a spacer. It was not noticeable prior to first ride but became apparent during ride.

I thought I had followed the manual to make it right, but obviously not. Any ideas on where it is easy to go wrong? How to best apply preload prior to tightening the top cap? Should the latter be done with front wheel on ground or could it be done with bike in a repair stand?
